Home Renovation in Wicklow: Restoring Old Windows, Furniture and Timber Floors

October 08, 2026

Older homes often have details that are worth keeping.

Timber windows, solid furniture and original floors can give a property character that is difficult to reproduce with new materials.

The problem is that age shows. Wood becomes worn, finishes fade, windows look tired and floors lose the appearance they once had.

That does not always mean replacement is the best answer.

Renovation can restore useful features while keeping the character of the property intact. Master Craft Decor provides home renovation and improvement services across Wicklow, including renovation of old windows and furniture and floor sanding and varnishing.

When Is Renovation Better Than Replacement?

The answer depends on the condition of the item and what you want from it.

A solid timber piece with good structural integrity may only need careful restoration. An older window may need preparation and refinishing rather than being removed completely.

Renovation can also make sense when an original feature contributes strongly to the appearance of the house.

Period properties, cottages and character homes can benefit from retaining existing features where practical.

Of course, there are times when replacement makes more sense. The important thing is to assess the condition before making the decision.

Renovation of Old Windows

Old windows can be one of the most noticeable parts of a property.

Peeling finishes, tired timber and neglected frames can make an otherwise well-kept house look run-down.

Renovation of old windows can involve cleaning, preparation, repairs and refinishing of existing materials.

The aim is to improve their appearance and condition while retaining the character of the window.

For older homes, this can be especially worthwhile because original windows contribute to the overall feel of the property.

Why Window Preparation Matters

Paint or finish applied over dirt, flaking material or damaged timber will not solve the underlying problem.

Older surfaces often need more preparation than new ones.

Loose material needs to be removed. Damaged areas may need attention. The surface then needs to be suitable for the new finish.

It takes time, but it provides a much better foundation.

Renovating Old Furniture

Furniture can suffer years of knocks, scratches, fading and everyday wear.

A good-quality older piece may still be structurally sound even when the finish has deteriorated.

Renovation of old furniture provides another option.

Depending on the item, work may include surface preparation, repair, refinishing or painting.

This can be particularly worthwhile when the furniture has sentimental value or when you want a particular piece to fit into a newly renovated room.

Old furniture does not necessarily need to look old.

With careful work, a tired piece can become a useful part of the room again.

Floor Sanding and Varnishing

Timber flooring can completely change the feel of a room.

But years of foot traffic eventually show. Scratches, stains, dull finishes and worn areas can make a floor look tired.

Floor sanding removes the worn surface and creates a cleaner foundation for a new finish.

The process requires care. Too much sanding can damage timber, while poor preparation can leave an uneven result.

After sanding, varnishing or another suitable protective finish can help preserve the floor and bring out the character of the wood.

How Floor Restoration Changes a Room

A restored timber floor can make a room feel noticeably fresher without changing the layout.

That makes floor sanding particularly useful during renovation projects where the structure of the room is already working well.

It can also work alongside painting.

If the walls are being refreshed at the same time, the floor finish and wall colour can be considered together. That tends to produce a more consistent result.

Combining Renovation With Painting

Many renovation projects eventually come back to painting.

Once old windows have been repaired, furniture restored or floors refinished, surrounding walls and woodwork may need attention too.

Professional painting can provide the final stage that brings the different parts of the renovation together.

This is particularly useful when a property has received several small updates over the years and the finishes no longer work well together.

Home Improvement Without Losing Character

Home improvement does not have to mean removing everything old.

In older properties, some of the original features may be exactly what gives the house its personality.

A sensible renovation looks at what can be retained and improved before deciding what needs to go.

That can produce a result that feels more natural than a complete modernisation.

It can also help avoid unnecessary work.

Planning a Renovation of an Older Property

Start with an assessment.

Look at the condition of the windows, flooring, furniture, walls and other features that may be worth retaining.

Then decide what genuinely needs replacing and what can be repaired.

The order of work matters too.

Dust-producing work such as floor sanding should generally be considered before final painting and finishing. Repair work should also be dealt with before decorative finishes are applied.

Good planning prevents one job from undoing another.

Renovation and Property Value

Well-executed renovation can also improve how a property is presented.

This is especially relevant when the property may eventually be sold.

Original timber features, restored flooring and well-maintained windows can contribute to the character of a home.

The key is keeping the work appropriate to the property rather than spending money simply for the sake of changing things.
