Automatic Driving Lessons in Dublin: What Beginners Need to Know

October 06, 2026

Learning to drive can feel like a lot at first. There are road signs to remember, junctions to understand, mirrors to check and plenty happening around you once you leave a quiet road.

For many new drivers, choosing an automatic car makes the process feel more manageable.

With automatic driving lessons in Dublin, you can concentrate on steering, observation, road position and making good decisions without having to coordinate a clutch and manual gear changes at the same time. That can be especially helpful if you are nervous about driving or are starting from scratch.

At Next Level Driving School, learners can choose from automatic and manual driving lessons in Tallaght, Dublin, with training tailored around their experience and confidence level.

Why Learn to Drive an Automatic?

An automatic transmission takes care of gear changes for you. There is no clutch pedal to manage and no need to decide when to change from one gear to another.

That gives a beginner more mental space to concentrate on the road.

This can be useful in Dublin, where traffic can change quickly. You might be approaching a roundabout while watching cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles. Removing manual gear changes from the equation can make those early lessons feel less overwhelming.

It does not mean automatic driving requires less attention. You still need strong observation, good positioning and proper control of the vehicle.

The car simply handles one part of the driving process for you.

Automatic Driving Lessons for Beginners

Your first driving lesson should not be about trying to do everything at once.

A good instructor will first make sure you understand the vehicle and feel comfortable in the driver's seat. From there, you can gradually move into basic driving situations.

A typical first lesson may involve:

Getting familiar with the automatic transmission
Adjusting the seat, mirrors and steering position
Understanding the pedals and vehicle controls
Moving off and stopping safely
Steering and maintaining road position
Learning how to check mirrors properly
Getting used to traffic and junctions

The pace matters.

Someone who has never driven before will need a different lesson structure from a learner who has already completed several hours of practice.

That is where one-on-one driving lessons can make a real difference.

What Makes Automatic Driving Different?

The biggest difference is the transmission.

In a manual car, the driver has to coordinate the clutch, accelerator and gear lever. In an automatic, the transmission changes gears itself.

You still control acceleration and braking, but there is no clutch pedal.

For a beginner, that can make it easier to focus on what matters most: what is happening around the car.

Automatic driving	Manual driving
No clutch pedal	Clutch required
Car changes gears automatically	Driver selects gears
Easier to focus on traffic and observation	More coordination required
Can suit nervous beginners	Gives the driver manual gear control

The right choice depends on what you want from your licence and the type of cars you expect to drive.

One important point is worth knowing before you decide.

If you take and pass your Irish driving test in an automatic vehicle, the RSA says your licence will carry code 78, restricting you to vehicles with automatic transmission. If you later want to drive a manual car, you will need to take another test in a manual vehicle.

Automatic Lessons Can Still Be Proper Driver Training

Choosing automatic does not mean taking shortcuts.

You still need to learn the fundamentals of safe driving. That includes observation, road positioning, speed management, dealing with junctions and roundabouts, anticipating hazards and responding appropriately to other road users.

These are the skills that make someone a competent driver.

The RSA's Essential Driver Training programme is designed around developing those behaviours and skills, with 12 structured sessions for standard EDT.

How Many Driving Lessons Will You Need?

There is no honest number that applies to every learner.

Some people pick up the basics quickly. Others need more time with junctions, parking, roundabouts or independent driving.

The 12 EDT sessions are a mandatory training programme for most learner drivers, but completing EDT does not automatically mean you are ready for the practical test. The RSA itself recommends continuing to learn and practise after EDT rather than treating the 12 sessions as a finish line.

Your instructor should be able to tell you where you are progressing well and where more practice is needed.

That is far more useful than chasing a fixed number of lessons.

Choosing a Patient Driving Instructor in Dublin

Your instructor matters.

If you are nervous, constantly rushed or afraid to ask questions, learning becomes harder than it needs to be.

Next Level Driving School describes its approach as patient and hands-on, with lessons designed around the learner's needs. The school is based in Tallaght and offers one-on-one driving lessons for learners at different stages.

Look for an instructor who:

Explains things clearly
Gives you time to think
Corrects mistakes without making you panic
Encourages independent decision-making
Adjusts lessons to your current ability

A calm instructor can make a huge difference during those first few weeks.

Driving Lessons for Beginners: What to Practise

Once you have learned the basics, your lessons should gradually become more realistic.

You might start with quieter roads and then progress to busier routes, junctions, roundabouts and more complicated traffic situations.

Do not worry if something that looked simple suddenly feels difficult in real traffic.

That is normal.

The aim is to become comfortable making decisions without needing constant instructions from your instructor.

Automatic Driving Lessons Before Your Test

Automatic lessons can also continue beyond EDT.

If you have completed your required training but still need more practice, additional driving lessons can help you work on specific weaknesses.

You may need extra time with:

Roundabouts
Lane positioning
Parking
Reversing
Junction observation
Speed control
Independent driving
Busy Dublin traffic

As the test gets closer, pre-test driving lessons can be used to assess where you stand and focus on the areas that still need work.

Tips for Your First Automatic Driving Lesson

Do not arrive expecting to be perfect.

You are there to learn.

Wear comfortable footwear so you can control the pedals properly. Bring your learner permit and listen carefully to your instructor's directions. If you do not understand something, ask.

Most importantly, do not compare yourself with another learner.

Someone else's tenth lesson may look very different from your first.

Progress comes from regular practice and useful feedback.
