Vitamins and Supplements Ireland: How to Read a Supplement Label

Buying vitamins and supplements online can be convenient, but comparing products can become confusing when every label uses different numbers, ingredients and serving sizes.

If you are shopping for vitamins and supplements in Ireland, learning how to read the label is one of the easiest ways to make a more informed choice.

Start With the Serving Size

The first number to check is not always the nutrient amount.

Look for the recommended daily serving.

One product may provide its nutrients in one gummy, while another may require two or three gummies.

Comparing products based on one gummy can, therefore, give you a misleading picture.

Always compare the nutrients supplied by the complete recommended daily serving.

Look at the Nutrient Amount

Vitamin and mineral labels usually provide a numerical amount for each nutrient.

You may see measurements such as milligrams or micrograms.

The HSE guide to vitamins and minerals explains more about individual vitamins and minerals, including their roles and the risks associated with excessive intake.

What Does NRV Mean?

NRV stands for Nutrient Reference Value.

It helps show how much a nutrient in a food or supplement contributes towards the reference amount used for food labelling.

It can be useful when comparing products, but it should not be treated as a personal prescription for how much of a nutrient you need.

Nutritional requirements can vary depending on age, sex, life stage and individual circumstances.

Read the Ingredients List

The nutrition panel tells you about the nutrients.

The ingredients list tells you what else is in the product.

For gummies, you may see ingredients such as:

Pectin
Flavourings
Sweeteners
Acidity regulators
Glazing agents
Fruit or plant ingredients

If you have an allergy, intolerance or dietary preference, the ingredients list is particularly important.

Check Whether the Product Suits Your Diet

Some people specifically look for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free or gelatin-free supplements.

Do not make assumptions based on the product format.

Check the actual product information.

Gaelwell's gummy supplement collection includes different products designed around different nutritional and dietary preferences.

Pay Attention to the Warnings

Warnings should never be ignored.

FSAI states that food supplement labels must include information such as the recommended daily portion, a warning not to exceed the recommended daily dose and a statement that food supplements should not replace a varied and balanced diet.

Read these instructions before starting a new supplement, particularly if you already take other products.

Watch Out for Duplicate Nutrients

It is easy to take the same nutrient from several products without realising it.

A multivitamin may already contain vitamin D, zinc or magnesium. Adding separate products containing the same nutrients could increase your overall intake.

If you take several supplements, put the labels beside each other and compare the nutrient panels.

Don't Choose Based Only on Health Claims

Words such as “immune”, “energy”, “beauty” and “wellness” are common across the supplement market.

The more useful question is what nutrients are actually present.

FSAI explains that nutrition and health claims must comply with EU legislation and meet specific conditions of use.

The nutrition panel should therefore always form part of your comparison.

When Should You Ask a Pharmacist or GP?

Professional advice can be useful if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking prescription medication, managing a medical condition or considering a high-dose nutrient.
