Small Group Fitness Training and Strength: Why Resistance Exercise Matters More as We Age

Getting older doesn't mean you have to accept becoming weaker.

In fact, maintaining strength can help you stay active, independent, and confident as the years go by. The right training can support everyday movements, from carrying shopping to climbing stairs or getting up from a chair.

That’s where Small Group Fitness Training can make a real difference. You get expert coaching, structured resistance exercise, and the encouragement of training with others. You don't have to figure everything out alone.

And in 2026, the evidence continues to reinforce the value of strength training throughout adulthood.

Why does strength become more important with age?

We naturally lose muscle mass and strength as we get older. How quickly this happens varies from person to person, and inactivity can accelerate the process.

That matters because strength isn't only about lifting heavier weights.

It's also about being able to move well and handle everyday tasks. Stronger legs can make stairs easier. Better upper-body strength can help with lifting and carrying. Good balance and functional strength can support confidence in daily movement.

Ireland's current national physical activity guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activities involving all major muscle groups at least twice a week for adults. For adults aged 65 and over, the guidelines also recommend varied activity that emphasises functional balance and strength on three or more days each week.

So, resistance exercise shouldn't be viewed as something reserved for athletes or younger gym-goers. It's an important part of staying capable throughout life.

What changed in the 2026 resistance-training guidance?

In March 2026, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) published a major update to its resistance-training guidance.

The review brought together 137 systematic reviews covering more than 30,000 participants. It looked at outcomes including muscle strength, muscle growth, power and physical performance across adulthood.

One message stands out: consistency matters.

You don't necessarily need an elaborate programme packed with complicated exercises. You need a training approach that you can perform regularly and progress appropriately.

The 2026 ACSM guidance also notes that resistance training doesn't require a traditional gym setup. Bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, and home-based training can all produce meaningful benefits.

That's encouraging if a busy gym doesn't appeal to you.

How Small Group Fitness Training can support strength

Small Group Fitness Training gives you the structure of a coached workout without the isolation that some people associate with exercising alone.

At Ideal Fitness, sessions usually have three to six participants per trainer. That allows the trainer to coach the group while still giving individuals attention and adapting exercises to different ability levels.

This matters as you get older because your training shouldn't simply copy someone else's workout.

You may need a different starting point, exercise variation, resistance level, or progression. Good coaching helps you work at the right level instead of trying to keep up with everyone around you.

Ideal Fitness uses functional training, bodyweight exercises and resistance training within its programmes. Its trainers also monitor progress and adjust programmes as needed.

The goal isn't to make every session harder.

The goal is to help you become stronger while keeping your training realistic and sustainable.

You don't need to lift extremely heavy weights

One common misconception is that strength training means lifting the heaviest weight possible.

It doesn't.

The 2026 ACSM review found that different resistance-training approaches can work, depending on the goal. It also found that advanced techniques aren't essential for the average healthy adult.

For someone returning to exercise, that could mean starting with bodyweight movements and gradually introducing resistance.

For someone already training, it could mean progressively increasing resistance, improving technique, or adjusting exercise volume.

The important part is matching the training to your current ability and your goal.

That's one reason Small Group Fitness Training can be useful. A trainer can demonstrate exercises, watch your technique, and make sensible adjustments while you train alongside others.

Strength is about more than muscle

When we talk about getting stronger, it's easy to focus only on muscle size.

But strength can have a much more practical purpose.

Think about getting out of a low chair, carrying groceries, walking up a hill, picking something up from the floor, or playing with your grandchildren.

These everyday movements require your muscles to work together.

That's why functional training matters. Ireland's national guidelines specifically highlight functional balance and strength activities for older adults.

The World Health Organization also recommends muscle-strengthening activities involving major muscle groups on at least two days each week for adults. For older adults with poorer mobility, it recommends activities that improve balance and help prevent falls on three or more days weekly.

Small Group Fitness Training can bring these principles into a practical weekly routine.

Rather than training simply for a number on the scales, you can work towards feeling stronger and more capable in everyday life.

What if you haven't exercised for years?

You don't need to be fit before you start exercising.

That's exactly why your starting point matters.

If you've been inactive for a while, jumping straight into intense workouts isn't necessary. A qualified trainer can help you begin at an appropriate level and build gradually.

At Ideal Fitness, the initial assessment considers areas such as your physical fitness, body composition, nutrition, health and medical history, and personal goals.

That information helps create a more personalised starting point.

If you have an existing health condition, injury or specific limitation, speak with your healthcare professional about appropriate exercise before starting or changing your programme.

Training with other people can help you stay consistent

There's another benefit to group training that shouldn't be overlooked: you're not doing it alone.

Sport Ireland's Irish Sports Monitor 2025, published in May 2026, found that more than 2.12 million people in Ireland participate in sport each week. Personal exercise was the country's most popular sporting activity, with 20% of adults participating weekly.

Having other people around you can make exercise feel more social and accountable.

You have a scheduled session to attend. You see familiar faces. Your trainer knows your progress. And you have people around you who are working towards their own goals.

That combination can make it easier to keep showing up.
