Irish weather doesn't do favours. A cold workshop makes for slow, sloppy work, and a muddy yard costs you money in clean-up and complaints.

Diesel heaters for workshops and garages

Heating a big shed with electricity gets expensive quickly. Diesel heaters give a lot of heat for the fuel and warm up fast, which is why you see them in garages, farm buildings and building sites.

Direct or indirect

A direct-fired heater blows warm air straight from the combustion into the space. It's efficient, but exhaust gases go into the room with the heat. An indirect-fired heater keeps combustion separate and vents exhaust through a flue, so the air you breathe stays cleaner.

For an enclosed workshop where people spend hours, an indirect heater with a flue is the safer choice. Direct heaters belong in well-ventilated, open spaces only, and even then you follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter.

Sizing the heater

Output is measured in kilowatts. A larger space, poor insulation and a leaky roller door all mean you need more. Undersize the heater and it runs all day and never gets you there. Oversize it and you waste fuel and cycle on and off.

Safety

Carbon monoxide is odourless and kills. Never run a heater without adequate ventilation, keep flammable material clear and don't leave one running unattended overnight. A carbon monoxide alarm in an enclosed workshop is cheap insurance.

Road sweepers

Stone, mud, straw and debris build up on farm roads, yards, forecourts and site entrances. Left alone, they end up on the public road, and that brings complaints and sometimes trouble from the authorities. A sweeper keeps you ahead of it.

Choosing well

Working width sets how fast you clear an area, and brush type decides how well it copes with fine dust against coarse debris. Consider what powers it. A tractor-mounted unit suits farms that already have the tractor, while a small self-contained one suits a yard without one.

Think about maintenance as well. Brushes wear out, and a sweeper that's hard to service sits in a corner. Look at how easily you can replace parts before you buy.

Pair a sweeper with a pressure washer for stubborn muck, and a hot pressure washer copes with grease and oil. A ventilator or fan helps if you're drying a floor.

Two-seater UTVs

A UTV carries two people and a load across ground a van won't manage. Farms, estates, quarries, groundskeeping and large sites use them to move staff, tools and materials.

What to weigh up

Payload and towing capacity tell you what the machine can do for you. Ground clearance and drive type matter on soft or steep land, and cab or open-frame design affects comfort in the rain. A tipping cargo bed saves labour on repeated loads.

Think about running costs too. Fuel type, service intervals and parts availability count for more than the sticker price over several years.

Rules and insurance

Don't assume a UTV can go on a public road. Irish rules on registration, tax, insurance and road use for these vehicles are strict, and they change, so check the current position with the relevant authority and your insurer before you buy. Off-road, use seatbelts and follow the manufacturer's guidance on loads and slopes.

Accessories that suit UTV work include tarpaulins, ratchet straps and slings and hi-vis clothing.

Budget for the running kit

Any big purchase comes with small ones. Heaters need fuel and a flue kit, sweepers need spare brushes and UTVs need a service schedule. Add those to the budget from the start and you avoid the surprise.
